You may remember the feature we at Listen In did on Muxtape, the new service which allows you to upload any 12 songs which can then be played through any computer with an internet connection.
At approximately 2:30pm today (Wed. May 21st), it was noticed that everyone's Muxtape, yes even yours, displayed 12 of the same song. Aim (with Stephen Jones) - Good Disease [Babybird does a Prince thing] to be more specific.
As of right now Muxtape.com as well as all muxtapes are down, and Justin, the creator of Muxtape has released this statement on the Muxtape blog:
This afternoon, someone gained access to our server and caused some problems. We are investigating and will have more information soon. I've taken the site down temporarily as a precaution. Thanks for your understanding, watch this space for an update.
This article will be updated with new information as it comes out.
Update:Muxtape.com still down, this time with an addendum to the statement: If we're not back by dawn, call the president.
Also another statement has been released on the blog stating that Muxtape will not be back up until they're "sure what happened this afternoon won't get repeated". It also states that there are backups of the altered data.
Update: Was it a hack after all? A new statement on the Muxtape blog says that what initially appeared as someone gaining access to our server could have possibly been an accident.
but that they will continue to investigate the situation.
Update: Turns out there was no hacking after all and the entire thing was just an accident. A new statement on Muxtape.com states We didn't get hacked, the problem is actually much more boring.
Final update: Muxtape.com as well as all muxtapes that were created in 3 weeks ago or earlier are back online. A final statement has been issued on Muxtape's Blog.
On May 21st, Muxtape experienced an error that caused every song in the database to be overwritten with the wrong artist & title. I initially reported this as a malicious act, but after taking the site down and investigating further it was clear that it was a fault of the software, for which I am wholly responsible. The last available complete backup of the songs database was three weeks old; so while the site is now repaired and back online, most songs uploaded in the last three weeks have disappeared.
I'm truly sorry for this massive inconvenience. Data integrity is something I take seriously, and to prevent this from happening again we've started creating complete backups of the database twice a day. In addition, Muxtape will soon be joined by two more developers (as opposed to one developer who's constantly distracted by everything else it takes to start and run a business/web site).
Thanks for your patience and understanding through this, and please contact us if you have any questions or concerns.
Seems like kind of a pointless, not that funny hack. It's not like Muxtape is Pandora or Last.fm or something.
Hmm, wasn't even aware of this service. I'll have to keep an eye on it. Ta Jacob!
I'm surprised they didn't at least pull a massive Rickroll.
Yeah that would have been more clever.
Now I have a new idea for Muxtape fun...
Though, from the looks of it, it was an internal error. I guess the servers just really wanted everyone to hear Aim.
