Artist Profile - Nico Vega

advertisement

It would be easy to write off the sultry Aja Volkman as simply rehashing the "I'm a girl and I can scream too" shtick, but if you scrape past the surface of Nico Vega, you'll find that she and her band mates are much more than meets the eye.

With one EP to their name, the Myspace Labeled Nico Vega, have hit the music scene hard and are quickly becoming an underground success. Taking their bands name from an inspirational friend, Nico Vega, is not another "Pretty female lead singer and those other guys that stand behind her" band. Guitarist Rich's style of strumming, and drummer Dan are just as much part of what makes Nico Vega as Aja's vocal ability which can best be described as heartbreakingly emotional and extremely powerful. (See Medicine Man, and Wooden Dolls)

With their eclectic mix of folk, blues and dance, Nico Vega are anything but a pop band. After hearing a few of their tracks it is apparent that this is a group that knows where the music comes from and are firmly supplanting themselves into, not just recklessly imitating, a style. As CD Baby said about the band, If lust and angst spawned a love child its name would be Nico Vega.

Nico Vega are more than worth the 5 dollar price tag (iTunes) of their EP, but if anything I encourage you to check out their videos on Myspace and Youtube. You won't regret it.

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

I really like her voice. She has a bit of the Azure Ray vibe and strongly resembles Kianna Alarid from Tilly and the Wall. I love the sort of scratchy sound she gets on the back end of her delivery.

I have spent the last few years hating the age of MySpace music and the "bands" that sounded like crap live but got tons of radio rotation. I like Aja's voice though, it sort of reminds me of the lead singer from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, raw, slightly raspy and throaty. I bet over time it will become a little smoother.

I'm just glad the Myspace label isn't just signing Fall Out Boy/Panic! at the Disco types.

I just watched those two videos...OMG! That girl can sang, and its obvious that she loves singing with the guitarist.

I really do wish I could go to the show at the Troubadour to see them live and get the full affect.

Yeah, she sounds like Janis Joplin without all the drugs.
